There was a terrible smell in the house. Sophie started to feel very
sick and her eyes were burning. She realised the smell was coming from
a storeroom next to the kitchen. She took off her scarf and held it over her

There were tanks of pesticide in the storeroom. Teresa’s father used
the pesticide for the crops on the farm. The poisonous liquid was pouring
out of one of the tanks. Teresa was lying unconscious on the floor. Sophie
dragged Teresa by the arms across the kitchen and into the garden. She
felt better in the fresh air but Teresa was still unconscious. At
that
moment a neighbor was passing by.
He saw two girls. ”I’ll go and
telephone for help,” he said.
Suddenly Teresa opened her eyes.
“Are you all right? What happened?” Sophie asked.
“One of the tanks exploded. I heard the noise and went into the
storeroom. But I couldn’t breathe in there,” answered Teresa.
