Trans- Siberian Railway
In the 19th century, Russia believed that
the development of Siberia was crucial to
Russian military and economic interests.
Construction of the Trans-Siberian
Railway began in 1891, during the reign
of Czar Alexander III. Soldiers and
prisoners were the primary workers, and
they worked from both ends of Russia
toward the center. The original route
passed through Manchuria, China, but
the current route, entirely through Russia,
completed construction in 1916, during
the reign of Czar Nicholas II. The railway
opened up Siberia for further economic
development, and many people moved to
the region and founded several new
cities.
Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is a concrete
gravity-archdam in the Black
Canyon of the Colorado River,
on the border between Arizona
and Nevada. The dam, located
48 kilometers (30 miles)
southeast of Las Vegas, is
named after Herbert Hoover,
who played an instrumental
role in its construction. Hoover
was an engineer who
promoted the dam, first as
Secretary of Commerce, and
later as President of the United
States.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel, often
called the Chunnel, is a
railway tunnel that lies
underneath the water of the

most amazing engineering
feats of the 20th century.
