Meeting New Year is one of the most ancient traditions in the
world.
New Year is a non religious holiday. It s
у
mbolizes the
beginning of the new life and hope for the future. It is the
time when families and friends come together at the table
covered with many favorite dishes. They give presents to each
other and they are in good mood. New Year trees are
decorated with beautiful New year toys. Children believe that
Father Frost puts presents under the tree.
Snegurochka
,the Father`s Frost grandaughter, helps him in his
journey to bring a lot of presents to the children.

Christmas or Christmas Day is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January as a religious and
cultural holiday in Russia. It is the time when families and friends get
together and they wish all the best to each other. It is really a sacred
holiday.
On Christmas people give presents to each other, listen to Christmas
music and carols, give Christmas cards to each other ,go to the church
celebrations and cook special meals.
The traditional colours of Christmas are green and red. White, silver
and gold are also popular. Red symbolizes the blood of Jesus Christ,
while green symbolizes eternal life, and in particular the evergreen
tree, which does not lose its leaves in winter
Christmas.

In late February and early March, Russia
celebrates Shrovetide, the most ancient festival
of the Slavonic people. In the old days, Slavs
believed that the change of seasons was the
struggle between Yarilo, god of the sun, and the
evil spirits of cold and darkness. People
believed that they had to help Yarilo fight
against winter. So, for the whole week, ancient
Russian villagers had fun and games. They built
a straw dummy of the Shrovetide Maid, then
put it on a sledge and pulled it around the
village laughing and playing. On the last day of
the festival, they burn it , 'We are seeing off
Shrovetide and waiting for the sun to come!
Come to us, spring, with your joy and kindness!'
The most important part of Shrovetide week
was making and eating pancakes. The hot,
round pancakes symbolized Yarilo. The Slavs
believed that by eating pancakes, they got the
power, light and warmth of the sun.

Almost all families of Russia remember the years of the Great
Patriotic War.
And now I would like to tell you some words about my great-
grandfather, who took part in the Great Patriotic War. His name was
Anatoly Ivanovich Shestakov. My great-grandfather was an officer.
When the Great Patriotic War began he and his family
lived near the board with Poland. Our soldiers could not resist attacks of
fashists and they had to retreat.
After that he fought against fashists near Moscow.
In 1943 in March my great-grandfather died for our Motherland near
Smolensk. His family was taken to prison. My great-grandmother was
with two little sons. One of them was my grandfather. And only in
Fabruary in 1945 they got freedom.
Every year on Victory Day we go to the cemetery to those who died in
that terrible war, who defended our country. And we are very grateful
to them.
